Why city sound (= acoustic living space) is getting more and more in focus today might have to do with the fact that our ‘space sense’ is related to the ‘listening sense’…

sounds of muggenhof – mini tuned city nürnberg

As part of an interdisziplinary artist competition initiated by the city of Nürnberg/Germany Tuned City is going to realize a ‘mini-event’ (11. – 17. April 2011) in a very interesting part of the city called Muggenhof/Eberhardshof. The area is a mix of havitation and industrial architecture inbetween a green belt with a little river on one side and the main connection highway to Fürth (and the parallel train track) on the other side. The industrial architecture is dominated by the former production facilities of AEG and the Quelle (mailoder) headquarter build by Ernst Neufert.

With workshops and public interventions we’re going to explore that neighborhood for one week. The results are going to be shown on the 16th of april with presentations, performances and lectures. (See details >>> workshops and lectures))

with Derek Holzer (USA/DE) & Mads Bech Paluszewski (DK)

Regenwald 2011 is a contemporary re-interpretation of David Tudor’s series of compositions from the 1970?s entitled “Rainforest”. It uses various types of sonic transducers to play live sounds through various resonant objects in the performance space, as well as through architectural features of the space itself.

soundmap of tallinn

This project involves the research and production of a guide to the city of Tallinn from an auditory perspective. Working as an interdisciplinary group (Anthropologists, Architects, Urbanists, Artists), the initial phase involves researching the sonic qualities of the urban environment including its spaces, flows, characteristics and cultural life. We will be asking if a city has its own sound and if so, what defines this sound and how does this shape its identity?
The “Sound Map of Tallinn” is being conducted in the frame of Tuned City Tallinn 2011. For more information please visit the project page!

Tuned City Tallinn 2011 pre-event documentation

We had the good fortune during the recent Tuned City pre-event, to spend some time in the historic Sea Plane Hanger currently under renovation in Tallinn. … You can read a very excellent docu on our recent activities in Tallinn on John Grzinich’s website with fotos, videos, audio-recordings and descriptions. Some more images can be found at our Tuned City Flickr pool and two video-documetations of the workshops by Pedro Balbas on youtube. We even made it to the Russian tv news in Tallinn with the project.

Echohaus
Live concert for 6 rooms, headphones ensemble and electronics (2010) WP

Echohaus, a concert for 6 rooms, headphone ensemble and electronics is based on an idea by the Hamburg composer and artist Felix Kubin, which was developed in collaboration with the composer Burkhard Friedrich, the ensemble Intégrales and the pop music producer Tobias Levin.

Initially the project was planned purely as studio production. So as to achieve a living, “cinematic” sound with unusual dynamics and mechanical amplification of detail, a special recording technique was developed whereby the musicians play in separate rooms, connected to one another via headphones.

opening of the permanent installation by mark bain

bug by mark bain

The Installation  BUG by Mark Bain in cooperation with Arno Brandlhuber is finally realised and running.
Via a headphone jack you can plug in and listen to the well received building. Mark Bain implemented a system of geodata and seismic sensors in the infrastructure of the building as well as in the concrete as the building was raised. These hyper-sensitive instruments capture all mechanic and acoustic micro sensations happening in and around the building, like the wind passing by the façade, foot steps on the stairs, raindrops on the roof and termic material expansion.

The installation will be official opened on the 22nd of january 2010, 9:30 P.M. with a performance by Mark Bain.
In collaboration with the gallery Koch Oberhuber Wolff

teufelsberg

Performance recomendation:
11. December 2009 / ausland Berlin

An acousmatic composition by Thomas Ankersmit and Valerio Tricoli, based on location recordings inside the main radar-dome of the abandoned Teufelsberg espionage facility.

The Teufelsberg is an artificial hill built from the rubble of war-damaged Berlin after the Second World War. It is the highest point in the city. The NSA, the US National Security Agency, built one of its largest listening stations on top of the hill, rumored to be part of the global ECHELON intelligence gathering network, and capable of intercepting radio transmissions deep into the Soviet Union. The base has been abandoned since the early 1990’s.  (Recorded by Paul Paulun.)
