Das Kulturreferat der Stadt Nürnberg in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Amt für Kultur und Freizeit/ Kulturbüro Muggenhof richtete im Rahmen des nächsten städteübergreifenden Kulturfestivals der Arbeitsgemeinschaft „Kultur im Großraum“, dem die Städte Nürnberg, Fürth, Erlangen und Schwabach angehören, den Kunstwettbewerb Give me five! Im Westen was Neues aus.
In diesen Kunstprojekten soll „Kultur“ in ihrer verändernden Kraft und als Motor gesellschaftlichen, politischen und stadtplanerischen Wandels thematisiert und sichtbar gemacht werden.
Wettbewerbsgebiet ist der „Nürnberger Westen“ mit dem Stadtteil Muggenhof/Eberhardshof, der durch weggebrochene (Groß-) Industrie einem rasanten Strukturwandel unterworfen worden ist. Der Stadtteil mit riesigen Brachflächen, leer stehenden Industriebauten (AEG und Quelle-Hauptquartier von Ernst Neufert!), hoher Arbeitslosigkeit und vielen sozialen und bildungspolitischen Problemen bedarf dringend einer Neuorientierung und Neuausrichtung, gleichzeitig bietet er ungeahnte Spielräume und Potentiale.
Durch künstlerische Interventionen und Aktionen in Innen- und Außenräumen und unter Beteiligung der dort ansässigen Bevölkerung und Akteuren aus der Kreativwirtschaft soll der Stadtteil „neu gedacht“ und in seiner Veränderbarkeit interaktiv erlebbar gemacht werden.

Sounds of Muggenhof – Tuned City Nürnberg nähert sich dem heterogenen Quartier aus akustischer Perspektive. Ein internationales und interdisziplinäres Team aus Architekten, Stadtforschern, Musikern, Klangkünstlern und Designern wird eine Woche lang den klanglichen Gegebenheiten Muggenhofs auf den Grund gehen und sich mit der Frage beschäftigen, welche Rolle Klang bei der Auseinandersetzung mit Stadt, Architektur, Raum und Identität haben kann.
In mehreren Workshops werden unterschiedliche Ansätze und Methoden einer solchen Annäherung vorgestellt und praktisch umgesetzt.
Das Spektrum reicht von Analyse, Klassifizierung, Dokumentation und Kartografie der Klanglandschaft, über Erprobung architektonischer Strukturen und Räume auf ‚Instrument-Qualitäten‘ bis zu gebauten Klang-Objekten und Rauminterventionen.
Für diese Workshops sollen Bewohner, aber auch Interessierte von außerhalb mit eingebunden werden. Die Ergebnisse der Workshops und Untersuchungen werden am abschließenden Wochenende vorgestellt.
Neben Installationen, öffentlichen Aktionen, Audio-Walks und Präsentationen wird das Programm durch Performances in situ sowie Vorträge zum Themenkomplex „Stadt-Klang-Identität“ ergänzt. (siehe Programmdetails >>> Workshops und Vorträge)

MYFBS (my favourite brussels sounds) ist ein Projekt im Rahmen eines künstlerisch-wissenschaftlichen Forschungsprogrammes und untersucht und dokumentiert den ’sound of Brussles‘. Das Projekt ist inspiriert von Peter Cusacks Your Favourite London Sound project. Das begleitende programm featured soundwalks mit Guy De Bièvre und einen workshop mit Chris Watson. Wir werden das tunedcity project vorstellen und einen Ausblick auf unser Projekt in Tallinn 2011 geben.

Progettazione urbana e spazi sonori

Tuned City war eingeladen zur internationalen Konferenz „Progettazione urbana e spazi sonori“ an der Politecnico di Milano sede di Piacenza am 7. Juni 2010.

McGinley, Patrick (US/EE)

Patrick McGinley (1974) is an american born sound and performance artist who has lived and worked in europe since 1996. from 1996 until 1998 he lived in paris, where he studied theatre, and began his sound experiments in the context of those studies. he has composed works for several theatre performances, including the works of his own company, as well as performing live soundworks for others. in 2002 he co-founded framework an organisation that produces a weekly radio show on london’s resonance 104.4fm. his work concentrates on the framing of sounds from our environment which normally pass through our ears unnoticed and unremarked, but which out of context become unrecognisable, alien and extraordinary.

Hall, Anthony (UK)

Antony Hall is a multimedia artist with an interest in freshwater biology, biophysics, electronics, and the physicality of sound. Working within contexts such as universities and museums, often in collaboration with scientists. He is interested in how we interface with science & technology; visually, physically and ideologically; and how these interactions effect us creatively and socially. Exemplified by an ongoing collaborative work with the owl project producing a hand crafted wooden laptop computer (the Log1K & iLog) among other instruments. He has also worked with electrogenic fish, harnessing their ability to communicate and navigate with electric fields, creating an artwork controlled by the live fish (ENKI).

“Sonic garden in the urban sphere” explores how the aural aspect can be taken into consideration in order to plan landscape architecture.
Its focus will be the conception and the realization of green areas in the urban environment, considering their specific sonotope.
“Sonic garden in the urban sphere” would like to give suggestions for an orchestration of the urban landscape, showing connections between the theories developed until now and a selection of projects realized in the field of  urban planning, landscape design and sound art.

Crescents
An accumulation of time-delayed reflections manifest a series of arced resonances between properties of sound, the structure of the hanger and arranged remnants from the location.

Bent on Listening
The palpable rebounding of echoes maintains a prominent role in configuring the epistemologies of sound. From the reflecting-arc diagrams of Marin Mersenne to the concave walls of acoustic defense, curvilinear shaping at times mirrors alternating tendencies in perceptual modes. Focusing on echo as an oscillatory event occurring on an architectural scale, this talk will trace eclectic outcomes from particular sonic-sinuous interminglings.

Merlini, Valeria (IT)

Born in Bolzano (IT), Valeria Merlini is a sound artist, turntablist, DJ and curator based in Berlin. After completing her study in Architecture in Florence, she obtained a Master’s degree in Sound Studies at UdK, Berlin. In her work she explores sounds of the everyday within an urban context through an interdisciplinary and critical approach. She is co-founder of Studio Urban Resonance, is a member of the Italian label Burp Enterprise and co-runs Staalplaat Radio. As a DJ she focuses on experimental electronic music, playing solo and also with several groups, constantly extending the conventions of turntablism, musique concrete, free improvisation and composed music. She was the director of Museruole Festival (IT, 2012) and has participated in numerous events and exhibitions including Berlin Sonic Places (D), Audiograft 2012 (UK), Tuned City (EE), Echtzeitmusiktage 2010 (D), STEIM’s Turntable Night 7 (NL), Audioscoop / IntroInSitu (NL), Das kleine Fieldrecording Festival (D), Avantgarde Festival Schiphorst (D), Soundscape and Listening (AT).

Tuned City Tallinn started with two workshop projects in the week 18.-22. may 2010, a series of artistic/scientific research projects in the following week and a first public project presentation on may 29th 2010.

This interdisciplinary workshop (of artists, architects, urban planners, social geographers) concentrates on exploring working methods for mapping and documenting urban spaces and architectural structures of the city of Tallinn. The methods used will combine research and practical skills in surveying and recording the „sonic geographies“ found throughout the city. As Tallinn has radically different zones, both architecturally and socially  our research aims to reflect expose and reflect the variety of soundscapes to be found there.

This would include the practical elements of an overall “field recording” and “listening” workshop with an introduction to sound, soundscape and field recording techniques. The structure of the workshop divides the overall group of participants into several small scouting teams (3 groups of 4 or 5 people) that make excursions to different districts of the city. A range of locations could include the Soviet ‚plattenbau‘ districts like Lasnamäe and Õismäe, the park areas of Kadriorg and Nõmme and the seaside districts of Pirita and Kopli (or whatever else can be introduced) for example.

Mapping the possible overlays of sonic regions or even specific sounds will help define potential “sonic landmarks”, as one of the main themes for the Tuned City conference to be held in July of 2011. Afterward we can pool the coordinates and recordings into a “map” or Survey of Acoustic Geography of Tallinn.

Form and Sound

The idea is to carry out a multidisciplinary laboratory building bridges amongst the different arts and genders. The proposal of this idea is interactive, an adventure that has to do with phenomena of natural laws and the ultimate technology. Sound does not exist without material support: it requires sources in space in order to have some kind of form and it needs ears in order to be heard. Sound depends on the material and the form of sound sources. This workshop explores the relationship between the form that creates sound and the sounds that create form.

This workshop project is meant to create artistic and scientific explorations of the unique acoustic situation of the old waterplane hangar and to find ways to preserve lively and illustrative
documentations of an outstanding spatial experience. The hangar will be changed  into a maritim museum, this development process causes a certain responsibility for the monument. A scientific analysis of the given frequencies and wavelength, the characteristics of the reverberation and diffusion in the space of the 3 domes and an investigation of the direct and related phenomena should provide a profound explanation. In close collaboration an artistic reflection should interpret, force – translate and visualize this unique sonotop.

(The artistic reflection could be build arround the topic of the echo, starting with the cultural history, the mythological background – the story about the nymph ‚echo‘ and ’narcissus‘ as an explanation model of the dispartment of the acoustic and the visual world. Going over to a natural scientific and musically artistic exploration with the above mentioned research project, guided tours through the architecture and artistic performances. And ending with a metaphorical and poetic view on the topic of reflection. (as reaction on causation, repetition, return of history, echos from beyond …)

The first public event introducing the „sonic landmarks tallinn“ project in 2011 took place around the seaplane hangar as it serves as a great example for the deep relation of architecture and sound and would illustrate in a nice way the main idea of tuned city – to make the acoustic dimension of space and architecture perceptible.

One lasting impression from the Berlin event was of the specific acoustic qualities which each of the spaces used for the conference and performances possessed – whether it was a room designed from the acoustic perspective (such as the anechoic chamber at the Technical University or the giant radio concert hall at the Nalepastrasse), an improvised situation (such as the disused repair hall of the Wriezener Bahnhof) or a temporary public situation (such as on Alexanderplatz). These acoustic qualities provided each site which a specific identity which defined that location in space, assisted or inhibited communication and changed one‘s awareness of their surroundings and illustrated in a great way the debated topics very plastically.

In the same way as tuned city explores the different topics in direct relation to the actual spaces this pre-event in the hangar will give a taste of how the Tallinn event in 2011 will shape. In a mixture of theory, artistic presentation and direct experience we will present the results of the artistic/scientific research and documentation project as well as the results of the workshops to the audience. Some lectures will introduce the concepts of aural architecture and acoustic awareness.

Tuned City presentation at the EMF, New York

Derek Holzer will present the Tuned City project at the Electronic Music Foundation in New York City on Tuesday 27 April. This lecture is free, and starts at 7pm.
In this lecture, we will see and hear some of the projects from the Tuned City event by Mark Bain, Raviv Ganchrow, Will Schrimshaw, John Grzinich, James Beckett, Akio Suzuki, Barry Blesser, Randy H.Y. Yau + Scott Arford, Thomas Ankersmit + Antoine Chessex, Bernhard Leitner, CRESSON, Farmers Manual, AGF, Chris Watson + BJ Nilsen, Jacob Kirkegaard, Martin Howse, Ralf Schreiber + Martin Kuentz and Staalplaat Sound System will be discussed, among others, as well as related projects covering the themes of Temporary Architecture for Sound, Buildings as Instruments and Composing the Cityscape. A limited number of books and program guides will also be available.

Live-Konzert für 6 Räume, Kopfhörerensemble und Elektronik (2010) UA

Echohaus, ein Konzert für 6 Räume, Kopfhörerensemble und Elektronik, geht auf eine Idee des Hamburger Komponisten und Künstlers Felix Kubin zurück, die in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Komponisten Burkhard Friedrich, dem ensemble Intégrales und dem Popmusikproduzenten Tobias Levin entwickelt wurde.

Das Projekt war zunächst als reine Studioproduktion geplant. Um einen lebendigen „cinematografischen“ Klang mit ungewöhnlichen Lautstärkeverhältnissen und mechanischen Detailvergrößerungen zu erreichen, wurde eine spezielle Aufnahmetechnik entwickelt, bei der die Musiker über Kopfhörer miteinander verbunden in getrennten Räumen spielen.
